Sheet metal fabrication

Bylaser Australia

Programmer & Industrial Designer, 2021 – 2023

Bylaser is a Brisbane sheet metal manufacturer. It laser cuts client files, some designed in-house, and takes them through full production: brake press bending, welding, powder coating and finishing, for automotive, industrial and architectural clients.

Role highlights

Key achievements

  1. 01

    Laser programming and nesting

I programmed and nested incoming laser-cutting jobs to reduce material waste, and wrote Python automation that increased efficiency by 90%.

  2. 02

    Vehicle bodies and accessories

I designed and manufactured ute trays, canopies, camper trailers, towbars and bullbars for clients including Speedy Towbars, Tough Tinnies and Terrain, Genie Performance Headers and JLG Industries.

  3. 03

    Reverse engineering for manufacture

Most work arrived as drawings or STEP files. I worked with clients to reverse engineer and improve their designs to suit our tolerances and capabilities, such as K-factors for folding, while adhering to all relevant Australian Design Rules.

  4. 04

    File to finished part

Parts went from laser cutting through brake press bending, welding and powder coating, and shipped as commercially available products.

  5. 05

    Fitment prototyping

For new parts, I co-designed with clients and refined fit through prototypes and tolerancing until each part fitted first time in production.

  6. 06

    Client training

I trained the director of Speedy Towbars in Rhino3D so he could design his own parts and send them to Bylaser to manufacture.
